Reading Response 14

In the ITU we created for Orange Glen, "Fairness in the Fields," we will be utilizing a team-teaching model. This will be most effective because we are all of different content areas. In this model, we will approach student with ideas like working together in research labs, planning themed days, etc. Because we will not be present in the same classroom, we will have to get more creative with our "team" approach.

Reading Response 13

This week, we used a "parallel" co-teaching model, in which the teacher and I roamed the room in cycles to make sure that all students had a chance to converse with the both of us about the book One Thousand Splendid Suns.

The model ITUs, especially the Orange Glen Homelessness ITU, helped me to understand the overall format of these ITUs and the expectations. I will, however, have to be a bit more creative when converting it into a website.

  • ·      Having guest speakers who have dealt with the topic in each class that is part of the ITU
o   Have students reflect on the speakers
  • ·      Encourage all perspectives, including the political, which will be looked at in the Social Sciences part of the ITU
  • ·      Always have the language class bring in the perspective of someone who is a lingual minority
  • ·      Let students do interviews across all subject areas to encourage a critical learning experience

Reading Response 7
The key elements of the service learning process occur throughout the actual service learning. These elements include preparation, action, reflection and demonstration.

Reading Response 4
Being in the English/Language Arts Discipline, it seems to me that I would be most effective in bringing in the “Art” side of our ITU. It is critical, especially in movements like Cesar Chavez’s, to encourage students to understand the artistic expression of the movement and period. These works of art (whether poetry, murals, music, or other literature) can effectively show the people’s consciousness.

List of Tools for ITU
·      Use Google Docs to collaborate in written work
·      Twitter and Diigo to share links and articles
·      “Hispanic Focus” article to relate to our school’s student body

Reading Response 2
The theme my team decided on was Cesar Chavez and Migrant Labor Rights. This movement goes across all three disciplines (English, History, and Spanish) and encourages students to compare past movements with our current polarized climate on the issue. Also, at Orange Glen, this is particularly valid because many students have parents who are working in the farming industry.

Reading Response 1
Two instructional strategies I would use in my ITU come from the “Hispanic Focus.” Much of this concentrates on SIOP-style models for the classroom that can assist English learners in the class.

One that seemed effective was the “Round-Robin Brainstorming” activity. In this activity, students share what they are thinking on a given topic and then share it out by passing what they wrote to the right. The student who receives it must read it aloud, and then they all discuss. This encourages all students, including ELs to read, write, and speak.
